Being a great workplace needs to be purposeful. It doesn’t happen by accident.

In 2022, Pitney Bowes was recognized by the Great Place to Work® Institute as one of India’s Top 20 Best Workplaces; Asia’s Top 50 Best Workplaces; and India’s Top 10 Best WorkplacesTM for Women 2022. What makes a great workplace? The answer might not surprise you.

Inclusion. Research overwhelmingly supports the same conclusion – more diverse companies outperform less diverse companies. A report by McKinsey & Company on Diversity wins: How inclusion matters, shows not only that the business case for diversity remains robust but also that the relationship between diversity and the likelihood of financial outperformance has strengthened over time. Inclusion is an outcome of two important and intersecting elements – personal experience and organizational perception.

Personal experience is how an employee personally experiences a sense of belonging, camaraderie, and inclusion at the workplace. While organizational perception captures what an employee thinks about the culture of fairness and inclusion at an organization at an overall level. Organizational perception is driven by fair and unbiased hiring practices, such as the ‘Blind Applications’ at Pitney Bowes India, that allow candidates to omit their first and last names in job applications, fair Performance Management metrics, inclusive team dynamics and other support systems.

For an organization to be truly inclusive, it needs to have strong cultural foundation that trickles down to an individual and personal level in conversations and interactions with smaller teams.

Culture. An organization’s culture is the most important tool in its quest to become a great workplace. At Pitney Bowes we have a strong and rooted culture built over a century that has helped navigate challenging moments through history and sees our shine through today. We are committed to ‘doing the right thing, the right way’, and this is driven by our leaders from the top.

Intersectionality. Embracing the whole human is important. The concept of Intersectionality aims to uncover the different layers of social stratification, like race, sexual orientation, social class, age, disability, and gender, that can combine to disadvantage people. It is a framework for seeing and telling different types of stories of what happens in our workplaces and in our societies. These stories allow us to get to know our colleagues better, appreciate their challenges, and to collectively create an environment that’s warm, welcoming, and inclusive, regardless of who we are or where we come from. Policies and procedures are just one part of the diversity and inclusion mix, a complementary approach is to meet with employees and learn about their unique stories and journeys. Inclusion starts at the top.

Thanks to all Pitney Bowes employees in India and globally who have played a pivotal role in supporting us to become a great workplace for ALL.
