Backstage at IronViz 2019 was quite possibly one of the coolest moments in my professional career. Together with my #datafam I had the absolute pleasure and privilege of watching three incredibly talented vizzers compete live on stage (a stage shared by the likes of Lady Gaga and Beyonce) using our #PBData. As the crowds shuffled in the buzz and excitement of the pregame audience was electric in anticipation of the incredible data stories that were about to be told.
For those of you not yet familiar with what Iron Viz is all about, buckle up because this was one wild and awesome ride. This data competition unlike any, sifts through thousands of submissions from tableau users to determine global qualifiers that compete for the top three finalist spots live at #data19. This year’s three lucky and talented finalists Hesham Eissa, Lindsey Poulter, and Joshua Smith, took stage at 5:30 to go head-to-head in an attempt to create the best visualization. IN TWENTY MINUTES. That's it! And their work was incredible. I'm still shocked by what they accomplished in that short amount of time. All three contestants were required to use the same data set, and that's the part that literally had us leaping out of our seats with excitement.
Each crunched data live from restaurants and food stores around the world using Pitney Bowes Data including World Points of Interest & Demographics Data. This eight-million-row data set features hundreds of food-related categories that the contestants used to create informative and dynamic vizzes as they battled it out live in front of thousands of their closest Tableau friends and fanatics. Each vizzer's score was determined by two components: the Judges’ Score and the Audience Score.
So, whose viz will reigned supreme? **Spoiler alert...It was a TIE! The announcement of Hesham Eissa and Joshua Smith was quickly followed by roaring applause and a confetti cannon explosion that has me now considering how to integrate a glorious windstorm of bright colored paper for every major announcement or celebration in my life moving forward. #lifegoals
If you missed it - you MUST watch the replay. Once you do, if Iron Viz has you feeling inspired, be sure to download the data used in the competition now available to all Tableau attendees for free. Anyone that downloads the data, and shares their viz on Tableau Public by December 12th with #PBData will be entered to win a set of Apple AirPods to be drawn on December 15.
