Setting up the scanner on the SendPro MailCenter 1000, 2000, and 3000
Products affected: SendPro® MailCenter 1000, SendPro® MailCenter 2000, SendPro® MailCenter 3000
You can set up the optional barcode scanner to help you control how barcodes are scanned, entered, and tested in the meter.
The options available are:
- The Default Scan type tab allows you to specify the type of account field the scanner will search for when it scans a barcode that does not contain a prefix.
- The Accounting Prefixes tab allows you to use barcodes to automatically enter information on the Run Mail screen (for example, the account name).
- The Concatenate Scans tab contains the characters you can use to join multiple barcodes into a single scan.
- The Barcode Auto-Enter tab allows you to turn on or off the ability of the system to automatically enter data scanned from a barcode into the SendPro MailCenter screen without forcing the operator to press the Enter key after the barcode is completely scanned.
- The Scanner Diagnostics tab allows you to verify what is actually being read by the scanner in the barcode without having to run mail.

Setting the default scan type
Set the default scan type to specify the type of account field the barcode scanner will search for when it scans the barcode. The scan type options available are:
- None: Use none if you do not want a default account type or if you will be scanning multiple fields.
- Account name: This can be any name you assign to an account, sub account or sub sub account.
- Account code: This is a unique code that you assign to identify the account, sub account or sub sub account.
- Job name: A job contains set values for such items as the account name, postage amount, class, an extra service, or mode such as Attached Scale or Differential weighing.
- Job ID 1and Job ID 2: Your accounting system can track mail runs using Job IDs.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Scanner Settings.
- Select the Default Scan Type tab. Select which account field you want the scanner to search for when scanning the barcodes.
- Select Home to return to the Home screen.
Setting the accounting prefixes
When creating barcodes for scanning multiple account fields you need to create barcodes that contain a 1 or 2 digit prefix. Use Accounting Prefixes to define the prefixes.
You can use this if you are transferring accounts from another accounting system or from a set of pre-printed barcodes.
As you scan a barcode, the meter reads the value of the field and enters that value in the appropriate field in Run Mail.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Scanner Settings.
- Select the Accounting Prefixes tab. The default prefixes assigned to the account fields appear.
- Account Name - A$
- Account Code - C$
- Job Name - P$
- Job ID 1 - J$
- Job ID 2 - K$
- Select the desired field and enter the appropriate prefix. For example, if you are scanning barcodes that contain account codes beginning with the prefix C$, you can use the default value. If the account code contains a different prefix, enter that value.
- Select Home to return to the Home screen.
Combining multiple barcodes into a single scan
To combine multiple barcode scans into one barcode, define the concatenate join characters first.
The typical barcode scanner can only accept a maximum of 30 characters. If you are scanning an account name that contains more than 30 characters you add a concatenation character at the end of the first 30 characters. These first 30 characters with the concatenation character at the end, would be on the first line and the second 20 characters would be on the second line. When you scan these two barcode lines, the meter combines them into a single barcode account value.
The available join characters are:
- + (plus)
- % (percent)
- . (period)
- / (forward slash)
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Scanner Settings.
- Select the Concatenate Scans tab and then select the appropriate character.
- Select Home to return to the Home screen.
Turning barcode auto-enter on or off
Set up your meter so that after it scans in a barcode value and it appears on the screen, it requires the operator to press Enter to accept that value.
Use this if you want an operator to confirm the correct barcode was scanned. By default, the meter automatically enters the value as soon as it scans in the barcode.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Scanner Settings.
- Select the Barcode Auto-Enter tab. Select the On option button to turn on the Auto-Enter feature; select Off turn it off.
- Select Home to return to the Home screen.
Using scanner diagnostics
Use Scanner Diagnostics to verify what is being read by the barcode scanner without having to print mail.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Scanner Settings.
- Select the Scanner Diagnostics tab.
- Scan the barcode. The values of the barcode appear on the screen. For example, the Account name, Scan type, Prefix and Value.
- Select Home to return to the Home screen.
