NEWS UPDATE: New USPS rule clarifying postmark definition
Effective December 24, 2025, USPS announced a new rule clarifying that a postmark reflects the date a mailpiece is processed at a USPS facility, not the date it was deposited or handed to a carrier. This change will not affect metered mail.
While USPS operations have not changed, network modernization means mail may travel before being postmarked, creating potential gaps between deposit and processing dates. This clarification is important for time-sensitive mail where postmarks are often used to determine timeliness. Read more here.
