Pitney Bowes Ranks on 2023 SmartWay High Performer List for Truck Carriers on Carbon Metrics

Fewer than 10 percent of all SmartWay carriers operate fleets efficient enough to make the SmartWay High Performer list for carbon emissions .

Pitney Bowes has a long-standing commitment to reaching carbon neutrality operations by 2040 and defined a strategy that would help us meet that objective. I’m proud that our commitment toward this goal and our overarching mission to continuing to do the right thing, the right way, lead to our spot on SmartWay’s High Performers: Truck Carriers, Carbon Metrics ranking.

Pitney Bowes continued partnership with the U.S. EPA SmartWay program for our fleet demonstrates our commitment to taking an active role in the fight to reduce carbon emissions. SmartWay helps companies advance supply chain sustainability by measuring, benchmarking, and improving freight transportation efficiency.

With SmartWay, we revaluated our fleet within our Global Ecommerce and Presort Services businesses and found ways to turn toward more sustainable fuel and actively monitor technological advances in the electrification of trucks. With our 550+ commercial power vehicles, vans, straight trucks, and tractors we anticipate continued growth and will strive to drive this growth through an environmentally efficient lens.

Learning about and implementing pilot programs in our operations like switching from diesel to electric yard trucks enables us to explore further implementation and adoption across our broader fleet.

In recent years, we have introduced energy-saving modifications to our trucks like an optimally sloped hood and grille, a bumper with an integrated air deflector, aerodynamic mirrors, upper door seals and integrated antennas which will ultimately enable us to have a more environmentally efficient operation. I’m proud to share that these new vehicles represent more than 60% of our fleet of commercial devices.

Idling vehicles also create energy inefficiencies, so our vehicles are now equipped with automatic engine shut-down systems to eliminate idling beyond a specified duration and our over-the-road sleeper trucks have auxiliary power units to minimize unnecessary fuel consumption due to idling. While we invest strongly in our fleets’ infrastructure, we also rely on our drivers who help us deliver on these objectives day in and day out.

We have taken substantial measures to not only improve our emissions awareness, but also improve our results and become a trusted partner in the sustainability space to our employees, clients, and communities. We are and will continue to improve our environmental efficiencies and aim to do the right thing, the right way. We thank our SmartWay partner for this honor and look forward to keeping pace with our 2040 goals.
