How Savvy Mailers Multiply Postage Savings by Combining Presort & Promotional Discounts

In 2022, mailers have a handful of ways to save significantly on postage costs.

The first opportunity is to presort your mail by zip code density prior to handing it off to the postal service. The more mail you have in a given zip code, the larger the discount you will receive on postage. Pitney Bowes makes this process easy and cost-effective. As the #1 workshare partner of the USPS®, Pitney Bowes Presort Services processes more mail than any other presort provider - which awards our clients the greatest possible volume-based savings.

The second opportunity is to take advantage of USPS promotions. The USPS offers annual incentive programs that award mailers postage savings for innovations in mailpiece creativity and interactivity.

Read on to learn how to maximize your savings potential by combining your everyday presort savings with limited-time USPS promotions.

Why does the USPS offer annual promotions?

In 2022, there are some really attractive incentives available for innovation in the mail. Why? Because the more creative and novel your mailpiece is, the more successful it is likely to be.

The USPS wants businesses to keep mailing consistently larger volumes of mail. Your best chance at achieving this is by frequently challenging your existing mail piece to make it more attractive and engaging for the recipient. USPS Promotions incentivize mailers to rethink their creative approach in an effort to boost overall mail performance.

Can I take advantage of USPS promotions if I also presort my mail?

Yes! Anyone can save with USPS promotions, no matter what other discounts you may already receive. So long as your mailpiece adheres to the terms and conditions, and you follow the appropriate steps to qualify, you have the opportunity to multiply your savings by combining your everyday presort discounts with the USPS’s limited-time promotional offers.

How do I qualify for a USPS promotion?

There are two steps needed to qualify for a promotion. You must:

  1. Get your mail piece pre-approved by the USPS: You can do this by going to the Promotions section of the USPS website. The USPS guidebooks and requirement documents will direct you to the appropriate promotion office for approval. Note: If you participated in a USPS promotion in a prior year and would like to reuse your mail creative, you must resubmit your campaign to the respective promotion office for approval. Prior use does not guarantee approval this year.
  2. Enroll in the relevant program: You will need to register for the program by going to the Incentive Programs section of the USPS Business Customer Gateway
If you are a client of Pitney Bowes and your mail piece has already been pre-approved by the USPS, we can assist with this process by claiming the discount on your behalf and returning a portion of it as a rebate. It doesn’t get easier than this.
If you did not get your mail piece pre-approved, the USPS will demand a return payment of the money you saved in postage. This is not a good situation for anyone involved. If you’re unsure whether your mail piece has been approved, we recommend that you seek approval anyway. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
